Feb 5 2012 The Nippers Are Back

Great excitement with the youngsters at Ferndale Park yesterday morning as the gates oncemore opened for a new session of the Arklow United Nippers Academy.  Already a highly enjoyable season with the Nippers, amongst both new and returning 'recruits', the Spring sessions should prove to be most enjoyable for all the young boys and girls who take to the astroturf at Ferndale Park.  The Nippers Academy is of course a fun and safe introduction for children willing to take their first steps into proper organised club football.  The best advert of course for the Nippers Academy remains those very same children - boys and girls - who come back to Ferndale every single Saturday morning for the one hour programme of learning soccer drills and skills under the coaching of Academy Director Chris McGeary and his staff.  New faces are always welcome to Ferndale Park on Saturday mornings, so........see you there!  Click here for more information on the Nippers Academy.

Feb 5 2012 13's Hit Seven Past Rovers

An excellent day for United's U13B team with an emphatic 7-1 win over Wicklow Rovers B at Old Dublin Road.  Matas Lukosevicius bagged a hat trick for the home side with other goals coming from Brian O'Halloran, Danny Doyle and Tadhg O'Callaghan.  Frustration for the U13A team, their fixture with Enniskerry was postponed.  Back at Ferndale Park the U10's were in action, facing a tough task against Wolfe Tone B.  Faolán Kavanagh was United's scorer in a 7-1 defeat.  Joe McGeary was on the mark for United's U9's in an exciting 2-2 draw away at St. Anthony's in Kilcoole.  In Senior football, both United sides enjoyed a share of the spoils.  The Senior A team faced Rathnew AFC at Ferndale with Ger Earls submitting a candidate for goal of the season, Bryan Moran firing home a second, and a rare strike from Nathan Carr (his first since playing U12 level!) seeing the home side drawing 3-3.  The Senior B team travelled to Carnew Celtic, with Darren Wolohan firing home to earn the B team a 1-1 draw.

Feb 4 2012 O'Neill Brace Secures Excellent Win

At a wet and windy Ferndale Park today the U8's took centre stage with an excellent performance and victory over a gallant Aughrim Rangers.  Ryan Kavanagh opened the scoring with an excellent finish before fellow midfielder Eoin O'Neill sealed the win with two superbly taken goals to secure a deserved 3-1 success.  Earlier in the day the U11's welcomed Greystones United to Ferndale Park.  Dean Kavanagh netted for United after a super counter attack but it was not to be as the home side were undone with a late flurry of goals from the away side.  United's U14's returned to the top of the WDSL U14 Premier Division with a thumping 7-0 win over Greystones United, also at Ferndale Park.  Both Sean Mulligan and Calem Devereux netted hat tricks in a convincing performance, with Cathal Kelleher firing home United's other goal.

Jan 29 2012 First Win Of The Year For Young United Stars

A fantastic win at a very wet Ferndale Park today for United's U10 team, beating St. Patrick's 3-1 in their opening Shield fixture.  James Wilson fired United into a first half lead but the visitors soon levelled.  Keeper Cillian Doyle restored United's lead with a successful spot kick and Tiarnan Lockhart sealed a cracking win with a third goal for the Green and Blacks.  The U13B team were valiant in defeat against runaway league leaders Carnew at Ferndale also.  Trailing 2-0 at half time, Matas Lukosevicius halved the deficit with an early second half penalty but a last minute goal sealed the victory for the visitors.  A waterlogged pitch at Old Dublin Road forced the postponement of the key United U14 v Wicklow Rovers B clash.

Jan 28 2012 Finn Park Success For U11's

A very encouraging win today for United's U11 team, with a thoroughly deserved 3-1 win away at St. Anthony's in Kilcoole.  United opened their Shield campaign slowly, falling behind to an early goal.  However, a superb piece of individual brilliance from Sean Aigbologa drew United level before the break.  The away side dominated the second half, with Szymon Basinski and Dylan Furlong securing an excellent winUnited's U13A team welcomed Arklow Town to Old Dublin Road and put on a superb display against the league leaders, with Tiernan McBride putting United into an early lead. The visitors levelled before the break and edged ahead midway through the second half.  A last minute goal sealed United's fate but all in all an excellent team effort that bodes well for the future.  A tough day for the U12's, also facing league leaders, in St. Patrick's at Old Dublin Road.  Jake Freeney and Jack Hanlon were on target for United, who now lose vital ground in the chase for the Division 2 league title.

Jan 23 2012 United Sides Glad To Be Back In League Action

A busy weekend just gone, great to see most of our schoolboy/girl sides back in WDSL League action.  Both U13A and U13B teams were simply delighted to enjoy league action as neither team had fulfilled a league fixture since November!  Congratulations again to the Under 10 team who broke their duck with a fine sharing of the spoils at Enniskerry; their recent fine run of form at long last yielding league points.  They commence their first WDSL Shield fixture at the weekend and we wish them well.  All league tables have now been updated, up to and including this weekend's games.  Onwards and upwards!  Click here to view the WDSL League standings.

Jan 22 2012 13B's Show Grit And Determination To Win The Points

Superb entertainment earlier today as United's U13B team welcomed Ashford Rovers to Old Dublin Road.  Trailing 1-0 at half time the 13B's turned on the style in the second half to win 2-1 with goals from Matas Lukosevicius and Conor Kelly.  Meanwhile the 13A's were in action yesterday, edged out 4-2 away at Enniskerry in extremely windy conditions at Ballyman Road.  Ciaran O'Shea and Glen Power were on target for United.  Disappointment and frustration in equal measure for United's Premier Division title chasing U14 team in the local derby with Arklow Town, also played earlier today at Old Dublin Road.  Cormac O'Shea put United ahead but it proved to be a frustrating day with the visitors edging home on a 3-1 scoreline.  Congratulations though to the Under 10's who secured an excellent share of the spoils in a thrilling 1-1 encounter at Enniskerry, with Jamie Martin steering home an excellent goal for the visitors.  Stephen Kinsella was United's sole scorer in a 4-1 defeat at table toppers St. Anthony's in their WDFL Division 1 Cup clash.  Alan McBride, Darren Wolohan and Richard Neary were all on target as the Senior B team eased past MK Dons in their WDFL Division 3 clash at Ferndale Park.

Jan 8 2012 Fun And Skills In Equal Measure At Leisure Centre

Silky skills aplenty at Arklow's Leisure Centre with Arklow United U10's taking centre stage at the WDSL Futsal Blitz.  Six games in a three hour frenetic period kept the team immensely busy, playing against a number of other Wiclow clubs in what has become an annual event.  With the Christmas break in WDSL league action the Futsal Blitz is an excellent platform for all the children to display their growing array of skills and confidence on a stage they'd normally not enjoy.  Click here for an excellent review of the day's entertainment from U10 team manager Dave Martin.

Dec 10 2011 All games bar one postponed

Disappointment today for the U12's and U13B's, with both due to travel to Ballyman Road to face their Enniskerry counterparts in key WDSL league fixtures.  Their cancellations left the eager Under 10 team taking centre stage away at Greystones United.  A highly entertaining game, both sides competing equally, the points stayed with the Woodlands based side despite United striker Adam Lambert finishing one of the moves of the season and keeper Cillian Doyle with a contender for Save of the Season after the home team had been awarded a penalty.  The U13A team were also due to fulfil a friendly fixture away at Gorey Rangers but that too fell foul of the adverse weather.  In WDFL action the U18 Youth team welcomed Wicklow Rovers to Ferndale Park knowing a good result would push United into third place in the League.  Unfortunately, no details of this match have yet been received.

Dec 10 2011 ...and there's still room in Santa's stocking....

Santa's little helpers are at this moment in time undertaking a pretty hectic schedule, in a secret location at the North Pole, amongst other things working on the extensive Arklow United Football Club range of Club Wear (in association with O'Neill's of course!).  The full range of United Club Wear can be viewed here, and will see some new additions in the months ahead.  With Winter now well and truly upon us, the temperature dropping faster than a lead balloon, it's time to ensure you're well wrapped up on matchday.  By the way, keep this amongst yourselves, but you should see how well Mrs. Claus looks in the latest Arklow United Rain Jacket...

Dec 6 2011 Superb Gesture From United Youngsters

A wonderful gesture from the many schoolboys and girls of Arklow United Football Club in recognising the tremendous work undertaken by the Arklow Cancer Support Group, a cheque for €300 was handed over by a number of Under 10 and Under 11 boys and girls to Mary O'Brien from the Arklow Cancer Support Group in the clubhouse at United's impressive Ferndale Park ground on Emoclew Road.  Each year the younger boys and girls at Arklow United receive a Christmas selection box from the Club but in keeping with a recent tradition the youngsters prefer to support local charities at a time of great need, and what better way for a local football club to support local charity than to give something back to their own community.  All at Arklow United are delighted and proud of the youngsters' decision to forego their Christmas treat from the Club, and are fully aware of the important service provided by the Arklow Cancer Support Group in the community.  Well done All!

Dec 4 2011 Late goals deny valiant U10's a share of the spoils

A cracking game at Ferndale Park today between our ever willing U10's and Ashford Rovers.  The sides were level, Cian McLoughlin on target for United, going into the closing stages, but two very late goals secured the points for the visitors.  Carnew edged past the U8's in a keenly contested game at Ferndale while a Mark Nolan hat trick earned the points for the Senior A team in a 3-0 win over Fassaroe YC.  Two goals apiece from Alan McBride and Jonathan Quinn secured a Senior double as the B team eased to a 4-2 win over Redbank United.  Johno Roche and Paul Nolan secured a 2-2 draw for the Youths away at Dalkey United.  Adverse weather decimated the fixture schedule for Old Dublin Road.  In yesterday's action, the U9's earned a hard fought 3-2 win away at Greystones United, with Jordan Wall bagging two and Joe McGeary the other United goal.  A James Furlong double was not enough to earn the U11's a share of the spoils, beaten 5-2 at Wolfe Tone.  All other fixtures were postponed.

Dec 2 2011 Busy Schedule at Old Dublin Road

Weather permitting, we have four games scheduled for Old Dublin Road this weekend, with our U12's, U13's - both A and B teams, and the U14's, all in WDSL action.  Four important games with plenty to play for, we anticipate extra traffic on the Old Dublin Road as a result.  All attending games at the venue are asked to not park on the Old Dublin Road but instead to enter the Club grounds and avail of the now extended car parking area, to the rear of the goal at the Rugby Club end of the ground.  If common sense can prevail there should be plenty of space for all attending the games.  At all times those attending games need to take into consideration the request of residents living nearby, and not just park and abandon on the old main road.  Enjoy the games, and perhaps some added advice - bring a brolley!

Nov 27 2011 United Stay Joint Top Of Premier Division

A hat trick from Sean Mulligan helped United's U14's ease to a comfortable 6-1 win over a spirited Greystones United at Greystones United earlier today at Woodlands.  Two from Cormac O'Shea and a fine strike from Cian Li kept United's title push on course.  United's U10's enjoyed their best performance of the season thus far against league leaders Ardmore Rovers before being edged out to a solitary goal.  The deadly duo of Sean Clare and Joe McGeary were oncemore on target for the U9's in another highly entertaining clash with Wicklow Rovers, the visitors earning the honours this time around with a 3-2 win at Ferndale Park.  In WDFL action, a brace from United's Alan McBride failed to  save the Senior B team from defeat, this time going down 2-4 at home to Fassaroe YC.

Nov 26 2011 Mordaunt Named As Kennedy Cup Manager

All at Arklow United Football Club offer sincere congratulations to club coach Mick Mordaunt who has been appointed by the Wicklow and District Schoolboy/girl League (WDSL) to manage the county's Kennedy Cup squad for the showpiece schoolboy tournament in June 2012, in Limerick.  Mick coaches Arklow United's U14 side, who are currently sharing top spot in the WDSL U14 Premier Division and aside bringing many years of experience to the table, he also offers players at all clubs at this age level a renewed opportunity to represent their county.  The Kennedy Cup is played annually in Limerick every June, and features the country's very best at schoolboy level in competition for national honours.  Mick's appointment is a deserved personal plaudit but also reflects on Arklow United Football Club's ever increasing standing in schoolboy/girl football here in County Wicklow.  We wish him and his squad all the very best in the months ahead.

Nov 26 2011 Woodwork Denies United Derby Win

Heroics from the visiting keeper and the width of a crossbar denied Arklow United U13B's a memorable derby victory over Arklow Town at Ferndale Park earlier today.  United dominated the first half of this WDSL Division 2 clash with Matas Lukosevicius and Lorcan Sheridan closest to opening the scoring.  With chances at a premium in the second half the game remained scoreless at the final whistle.  The WDSL U12 Division 2 top of the table lash between Aughrim Rangers and United's U12's also ended in stalemate with four goals shared at Aughrim's Allen Park, Adam Lennon on target twice for United.  The U8's were once again in fine form, away at a strong Ardmore Rovers in Bray.  Ryan Kavanagh fired United into a half time lead but lady luck chose not to shine on United today with two second half goals, including a last kick of the game, earning the home side a win.  Equally, the Youths team were denied a share of the spoils at Ferndale Park, goals from Johno Roche and Brendan O'Shea seemingly earning United a point against Shankill.  However, a last kick of the game earned the visitors three precious points as United were edged out 3-2.

Nov 20 2011 U14's Keep Premier Title Hopes On Track

An important three points today for Arklow United U14's, winning 5-3 away at Wicklow Rovers B in Whitegates.  A tight game between two committed teams, United earned the points thanks to two goals from Calem Devereux, a superb left foot strike from Zach Kilbride, and two second half goals from Peter Tyrrell.  The win keeps United joint top of the WDSL U14 Premier Division.  Elsewhere, back at Ferndale Park, goals from Joe McGeary, Jordan Wall and Sean Clare earned the U9's a fine win over Greystones United B.  Match report to follow on the U9's.  The Senior A team, though putting on a fine performance, were well beaten in the end by title chasing St. Anthony's.  The Senior B team drew 1-1 with Carnew Celtic in a feisty affair.  We are still awaiting news of our Youths and Ladies teams, away to Ardmore Rovers and Glen Celtic respectively.  No news of either I'm afraid!

Nov 19 2011 Furlong Strike Seals Derby Win

Another excellent display earlier today from Arklow United U11's earned the bragging rights over local rivals Arklow Town in what was a keenly contested and highly entertaining clash at Ferndale Park.  A Dylan Furlong strike, ten minutes before half time secured all three points for the Green and Blacks, who now move ever upwards in the League.  United's U8's made it a derby day double, with an excellent 3-2 win over Arklow Town in a friendly fixture earlier this afternoon.  Jack Flusk was United's matchwinner with a wonderful hat trick seeing United triumph.  Frustration for United's 12's, 13A and 13B sides, with all games being postponed due to the adverse weather in the past 24-48 hours leaving pitches unplayable.

Nov 13 2011 Honours even at Ferndale

Arklow United U9's faced Roundwood earlier today at Ferndale Park, their second meeting of the season and their second draw, this game finishing 1-1, with Sean Clare on target for United.  The U8's had a tough day at Carnew, with Ryan Kavanagh on target in a 6-1 defeat.  The U10's travelled to leaders Avonmore and though beaten 6-0 they put up a spirited effort, notably in the second half.  United's U11's were desperately unlucky at Finlay Park, edged out 2-1, with Ethan Curran netting for United.  Great disappointment too for United's unlucky 13B team, knocked out of the WDSL Division 2 Cup on penalties after their quarter final meeting with Greystones United in Woodlands ended scoreless.  Despite heroics in goal from keeper Ross Joyce the home team advanced to the semi's.  Equally disappointing news from the Senior B team, losing to Wicklow Celtic after extra time in their Charlie Byrne Cup quarter final clash at Ferndale Park, John Quinn netting United's goal from the spot.

Nov 12 2011 Home win keeps Title challenge in sight

Arklow United U12's enjoyed a memorable day playing their first ever fixture on the main pitch at Ferndale Park earlier today.  Welcoming Avonmore both teams provided everyone with sixty minutes of exciting end to end fare, with the home team prevailing 4-3 to secure the points.  United's goalscorers were Stephen Quinn, Darragh Murray, Adam Lennon and Olufemi Tantmoini.  Disappointment out at Old Dublin Road where the U13A team were surprisingly beaten by a hungrier Wolfe Tone side.  Goals from Philip Malomo (2) and James Hogan had put the home side in a great position to claim all three points, but a late capitulation proved costly.  Elsewhere, United's Youths were given a walkover from Terenure, and tomorrow's WDFL Division 1 fixture between United's Senior A team and St. Fergal's AFC at Ballywaltrim has already been postponed.

Nov 6 2011 United left ro rue missed opportunities

A disappointing afternoon earlier today for United's U14's, edged out 3-2 away at Beechwood in their SFAI U13 Goodson Cup 3rd Round clash at Brickfields Park in Drimnagh.  United rarely hit the form they are so capable of, and were always chasing a game that was theirs to win.  Goals from Cormac O'Shea and Calem Devereux failed to illuminate a United performance and keeper Eoin Kavanagh was too often called upon to make a number of excellent saves denying the home side repeatedly.  United's U8's were again excellent in performance but in spurning a host of goalscoring chances they grabbed defeat from the jaws of victory, against Ardmore Rovers B at Ferndale Park.  The U9's had a super 2-0 win away at Wicklow Rovers B, with Sean Clare and Joe McGeary on target in an excellent 2-0 win.  The U10's were desperately unlucky not to earn the points, an excellent team effort seeing them push Fassaroe YC all the way, going down 1-0 in the end.  Stuart O'Neill bagged four of United's whopping 8 in a thumping 8-1 home win for United's Senior A team, easing past Ballywaltrim in their WDFL Wicklow Cup First Round clash.  Tom Kavanagh bagged a hat trick, with the prolific Paul Flusk rounding off United's day, seeing the A's advance.  Lesser joy for the B team, beaten at home by a stronger Roundwood side in their Wicklow Cup clash.  Defeat also for the Youths, 2-1 away at Dublin side Granada, with Brendan O'Shea on target for United.  The Ladies' clash with Wexford Celtic was postponed.  Match reports on all games played to follow.

Nov 5 2011 Super Away Win In Wicklow For Impressive B's

An excellent team performance earlier today for United's U13B team, 6-0 winners in Whitegates over a game Wicklow Rovers side.  Matas Lukosevicius bagged four of United's six goal haul, with Conor O'Reilly and Philip McNally netting the other two in a fine win that sees United shoot up the league standings in Division 2.  Little or not action elsewhere today with the vast majority of WDSL 11-a-side action postponed, leaving both U13A and U12's without action again this weekend.  Elsewhere, in Bray earlier today the draws were made for the forthcoming WDSL Cup competitions, the various draws seeing United's U12's, U13A's and U14s all receiving byes in the opening round of matches.  Today's victors, the U13B have been drawn to travel to Greystones United B in their opening cup tie.  Further details on all WDSL cup draws to follow.

Oct 30 2011 Excellent performance from United youngsters

All graduates from the Club's excellent Nippers Academy, United's U8's put on their best performance of the season to date with a terrific 3-1 win over Enniskerry at Ferndale Park today.  Adam Whyte fired home from close range to give United the lead, before Damien Aigbologa doubled the home side's lead with a brilliant goal.  Jack Flusk added a third goal late in the game after fine work by Eoin O'Neill.  United's U9's game versus Greystones United was postponed, allowing the U9's and the U10's to mix together in an excellent friendly training match, designed to further encourage young players to develop their skills.  In Senior matters, a mixed day for United, with the Senior A team sharing a six goal thriller away at St. Patrick's in Kilcashel.  Paul Flusk fired home a double with Mark Nolan adding United's other goal.  Alan McBride was on target for the B team in a disappointing 1-4 home defeat against Wicklow Town B, while the Senior Ladies endured a heavy defeat at the hands of Glen Celtic, also at Ferndale Park.

Oct 29 2011 Unlucky United lose out at home

Two missed penalties and two own goals conceded paint a picture of United's Under 11's defeat against Rathnew A at Ferndale Park earlier today.  Despite dominating the game for long spells it just wasn't to be United's lucky day in front of goal, and our misfortunes were compounded with two own goals easing Rathnew to victory.  Match report here.  Preparing for next week's key SFAI U14 National Cup third round clash away at Dublin club Beechwood, United's U14's entertained Courtown Hibs at Ferndale Park in a keenly contested friendly game, with the home side coming from 0-3 down at half time to level 3-3.  Arklow United Youths, due to face Rathnew in the WDFL U18 Division, were given a walkover.  Lastly, don't forget, the clocks go back one hour tonight, bringing to an end what we laughingly at times call "Summer" time.

Oct 27 2011 United past and present set to attend Special Mass

A special Mass will be held this coming Saturday evening, at 7pm, in Sts. Mary and Peter's Church Arklow, celebrating all local sporting bodies.  Arklow United Football Club would like to extend a warm welcome to all members of the Club, whether past or present, and would like to see all present day members of the Club wearing club attire.  All schoolboy / girl teams are to attend.  Parents, family and friends are also welcome to attend the celebratory Mass.

Oct 23 2011 Goals aplenty in the Flusk household!

Jack Flusk was on the mark for United's U8's this morning, in a super 2-2 draw with Fassaroe YC at Ferndale Park; Damien Aigbologa United's other goalscorer.  Later in the day, father Paul (age unknown!) bagged a hat trick for United's Senior A team, 5-1 winners over Wolfe Tone Celtic.  Biggest goalscorers of the weekend, United's U12's, who rattled the net 22 times against Avonmore B, with Adam Lennon firing home eleven of United's haul, and Cillian Appleby also bagging a hat trick.  A key win for United's U13A team at Wolfe Tone, 6-0 the final score, Peter Hempenstall's double putting United on their way to three points.  The U13B team put on an excellent display away in a defeat at Carnew.  Rain stopped play was the order of the day for United's Senior B team, the Youths and the Senior Ladies team - all three teams seeing their fixtures postponed.

Oct 22 2011 Two goal Basinski earns vital away win

Szymon Basinski was Arklow United U11's matchwinner earlier today, netting both goals in a hard fought 2-0 away win over Ashford Rovers.  An excellent team performance, a clean sheet and three precious points seeing them leapfrog Ashford in the league table.  United's U10's were also in action and though well beaten at Wolfe Tone B the players remain focused on securing that first win of the season.  Keep the faith, it's coming!  On a quiet Saturday, the only other team playing were the U9's, facing Roundwood in an exciting match at Vartry Park.   A share of the spoils, 2-2, with Joe McGeary and Ethan Kendrick on the scoresheet for the away team.

Oct 16 2011 Under 14's continue fine run with Dalkey win

Another good day today for United's U14's, winning 8-2 away at Dalkey United in the SFAI Goodson Cup Round 2 clash at Hyde Park in Dalkey.  The current WDSL U14 Premier Division league leaders were always in control after full back Kyle O'Connor unleashed an unstoppable drive in the opening minute and United never looked back.  Peter Tyrrell (2), Sean Cronin (2), Cormac O'Shea, Callum Smale and Ros McBride were United's other scorers.  The U10's put in a spirited performance against Greystones before going down 5-1, with Craig Kavanagh on target for the home side.  A disappointing day all round for our Senior sides, with the A team on the wrong end of a 0-3 reverse against Avonmore at Ferndale Park.  The B team lost 1-0 at Wicklow Town, a penalty conceded midway through the second half proving costly while back at Ferndale Park Jessica McDonald bagged her second goal of the season for United Ladies, who lost out to Shillellagh United 5-1.

Oct 15 2011 United sides exit National Cup

A hard day at the office today for both United U11's and U13's in their respective National Cup clashes against Rathangan and Newbridge Town.  The U11's made the long journey to Rathangan to face a very strong home team, Dylan Furlong netting for United.  At Ferndale Park, the U13's faced a tough encounter with a very strong and fancied Newbridge Town.  The visitors emerged victorious 5-0 and though well beaten on the day there were plenty of positives to take back into domestic WDSL football.  Damien Aigbologa was United''s two goal star in a close 3-2 defeat away at Ashford while the U9's continue to thrill all who watch them, winning 2-1 away at Greystones United, with Joe McGeary and Sean Clare on the scoresheet in an impressive team performance.  United's Youth team were in fine form at Ferndale Park, edging past Dalkey United 2-1, with goals from Sean Loughlin and Dylan Hanlon.  Match reports on all games to follow.

Oct 15 2011 United sides set for National Cup challenge

Three Arklow United sides face National Cup opponents this weekend, with the U11's facing a journey to Rathangan and the U13's at home at Ferndale Park later today, welcoming a strong Newbridge Town in their Troy Cup clash.  The U11's are making their debut in Menton-Seery Cup action so we wish them all the best as they undertake their first steps in National Cup action.  Tomorrow, Sunday, sees our U14's travelling to Paul McGrath's old stomping ground, and a tough assignment at Dalkey United in the Goodson Cup.  Hopes are high that our sides can do well with the latest League standings in WDSL action showing United with three teams currently sitting proudly in top spot in their respective divisions - the U12's sit in pole position in Division 2, while both Arklow United U13's and U14's are on top in their respective Premier Divisions.  Best of luck to all United sides this weekend, in National Cup and WDSL action!

Oct 13 2011 Nippers Academy continues to grow in both size and enjoyment

Singer Christy Moore ("who?", ask the kids!) once sang about the craic being ninety in the Isle of Man.  Well, every Saturday morning at Ferndale Park, the Arklow United Nippers Academy opens it doors to welcome boys and girls into what is proving to be a roaring success this year, the 'craic' greater than ninety!  Essentially for boys and girls aged 6 and 7 the Nippers Academy provides a fun and safe environment in which to introduce children to organised football.  The Nippers, as the title might suggest, also caters for children younger than 6 or 7, with each group being properly supervised by Nippers Director Chris McGeary and his growing army of coaches.  The Saturday morning Academy, costing just €2 per child, kicks off at 11am and runs for one hour, till 12 midday - so come along and see for yourself how much fun is being experienced by the youngsters of Arklow!  And don't forget to tell your friends too!  See you there!

Sep 24 2011 United squeezed out in a thriller

A great game to watch at Ferndale Park earlier today, as Arklow United U11's entertained Wolfe Tone B in a WDSL Division 1 clash.  For the second successive home game United were pipped at the post, edged out 4-3, but more importantly the team performance was there for all to see, with all of the players performing well.  United's goalscorers on the day were Ethan Curran, Dylan Furlong and Dean Kavanagh, with keeper Oisin Martin brilliantly saving a penalty at the other end.  Match report here.

Sep 22 2011 United Ladies looking forward to new season

Arklow United Football Club Ladies kick off the new season in the Wexford Women's Football League with an opening Division 1B clash away at Tombrack United this weekend.  Formed just four years ago, the squad at Ferndale Park has consistently improved over time resulting in the Ladies securing promotion to the aforementioned Division 1B, having enjoyed a promotion winning season in Division 2 last year.  As ever United are looking for new players, to further develop the platform for Ladies to come and play football.  For further details about United's Senior Ladies team please contact Nicola Walker at 086 0629988.  Kick off in Tombrack this coming Sunday is at 1pm.  Best of luck this season to Arklow United Ladies.

Sep 21 2011 United delighted with Medicare sponsor deal

Arklow United Football Club would like to thank Ferrybank Pharmacy for their extremely generous gesture in supplying all schoolboy/girl teams at Ferndale Park with medicare and First Aid kits.  John Robinson from Ferrybank Pharmacy was delighted to hand over the kits to United's John Cronin earlier today (pictured right) at the Pharmacy's premise on Ferrybank, Arklow and wished all teams well for the season ahead.  It goes without saying that all club managers will hope that usage of the sponsored kits will not be needed at any time throughout the year!  Drop in to Ferrybank Pharmacy for a fast, professional and confidential prescription service. With free parking out front, they are conveniently located close to Sheltonville doctor’s surgery, Arklow.

Sep 18 2011 Four goal Devereux leads the way versus Avonmore

Biggest winners today were the U14 team, 8-0 away at Avonmore, with striker Calem Devereux bagging four of United's total.  A Matas Lukosevicius strike earned the U13B team an excellent point away at Greystones United.  Meanwhile, back at Ferndale Park, excitement aplenty with both U9's and U10's in action.  A wonderful goal from Sean Clare looked like being the matchwinner versus Enniskerry in the U8 game until a last kick of the game equaliser levelled matters.  The U10's were unlucky to be edged out in a five goal thriller versus Avonmore.  In senior football, a good day for both A and B sides.  The Senior A team were seconds away from all three points in their WDFL Division 1 game at Fassaroe before the home side levelled while goals from Niall Higgins and Jonathan Quinn earned the B team derby bragging rights in a 2-0 win over Arklow Celtic.

Sep 16 2011 Safety First At Old Dublin Road

All visitors attending fixtures being played at the Old Dublin Road ground have been asked to park within the Club grounds, and not on the road outside.  With an increase in fixtures at the venue a number of vehicles have been left outside the ground, resulting in road safety concern amongst local residents.  We ask therefore once again that all visitors attending games park their vehicles in off the road within the car park area adjacent to the pitch.  Thank you!

Sep 11 2011 Missed opportunities at Old Dublin Road

Frustration earlier today for United's talented U14 squad with a 6-3 reverse at home to last season's Premier Division Runners-Up, Wicklow Rovers A.  United were playing superbly well and leading 3-1 thanks to goals from Peter Tyrrell (2) and Cormac O'Shea midway through the second half before a late capitulation undone the previous good work.  United's U9's travelled to Wicklow to face Rovers' U9's and despite a superb team performance they were beaten 3-2 with a late late thunderbolt seeing the home side edge past the U9's.  In WDFL action, the Senior A team were away at Avonmore in a Division 1 clash and the Senior B team at home to Charlesland.  Unfortunately we have no news of either game as of yet, or indeed the Youths match versus Blessington played on Saturday.

Sep 17 2011 Maghery magic and Roche trickery secures the points for United

A brace from the lively Johno Roche and one from Paudge Kelleher secured an excellent 3-2 victory for United's Youth team in a thoroughly entertaining and sporting game this afternoon at Ferndale Park.  United's U11 team endured a hard day away at Rathnew, with Ethan Curran bagging United's two goals.  Similar disappointment for the U13's who lost out at Arklow Town but it was a goalfest at Woodlands where the U12's fired home eight goals against Greystones, with Adam Lennon finding the target three times.  For the second week running the U8's were left without a game, their scheduled fixture versus Ardmore Rovers in Bray being postponed.

Sep 10 2011 United turn on the style to ease past Rathnew

The first day of the new WDSL season saw a number of United sides in action.  The U10's were involved in a ten goal thriller away at Fassaroe, edged out 6-4 with both Cian McLaughlin and Craig Kavanagh netting twice.  A spirited fightback from the U11's at Ferndale Park just fell short as they too were edged out, losing 4-3 to a fine Ashford side.  Defeats also for the U12's and U13B teams, at Aughrim Rangers and Arklow Town respectively.  However, finest performance and result of the day came from an impressive U13A side who put on a display of fine attacking football against visitors Rathnew.  Goals from five different scorers, Cillian Kavanagh opening the account in the fifteenth minute.  Further United goals came from Peter Hempenstall, Glen Power, Philip Malomo and Ciarán O'Shea.  Match report here.

Sep 6 2011 United sides set for National Cup challenge

For the first time ever in the history of the SFAI National Cups, a centralised draw at all age levels has taken place at the SFAI headquarters in Abbotstown.  Arklow United has 5 teams competing this season.  In the U11 Menton Seery Cup, United were afforded a bye into the second round, and there they will face a trip to either Rathangan or Greystones United A.  Rathangan's name also came out of the hat as United's opposition in the U12 Norton Cup, with United travelling to the Kildare side for their First Round clash.  In the U13 Troy Cup, United were granted a bye into the Second Round, and lady luck shone further with a home draw to be played against the winners of the Newbridge Town v Knocklyon United first round clash.  At U14 level, United have been given a bye into Round 2 but will face a trek to either Dalkey United B or Kilcock Celtic B.  In the U16 Barry Cup, Arklow United were first out of the hat, and will welcome SDFL side Blessington to Ferndale Park.  Should United win that cup clash they will again be at home in the Second Round, facing the winners of Monksland v Broadford Rovers.  Best of luck to all competing United sides.

Sep 5 2011 Under 8's graduating from the Nippers Academy into WDSL action

There will be excitement aplenty this coming weekend as Arklow United Under 8's take their very first steps into WDSL action, with a warm Arklow United welcome for Avonmore A, United's opponents on our magnificent astro turf this coming Sunday morning.  Most of United's squad are graduates of the excellent Arklow United Nippers Academy, and if they all apply themselves as well to WDSL non-competitive action as they have in the Nippers then the management team of David O'Neill, Glen Wall and Ben Travers will be only too delighted to oversee the development of an exciting group of players.  Support for the youngsters on Sunday morning would be greatly appreciated and in the Under 8 section of the Club website we will, over the course of the season, monitor their progress; enjoy the highs and lows, and more than anything else, provide a platform for youngsters to enjoy their football at all times.  All on the Committee wish the Under 8's and the management team the very best for the season ahead!  Come on United!

Aug 6 2011 Flying start for young Nippers

If medals were freely awarded for enthusiasm and eagerness to learn and improve their skills then the boys and girls at today's Arklow United Nippers Academy would be first in the queue.  A bright sunny morning on the astroturf at Ferndale Park, the young Nippers were put through their paces by Chris McGeary and his team of coaches.  Plenty of dazzling skills on display from the players and of course some light hearted moments, which is very much part of what the Academy is about:  having fun and learning the basic skills in a friendly environment.  The Nippers Academy resumes oncemore again next Saturday, at 11am at Ferndale Park, and indeed runs weekly at that same time.  Spread the word!

Images from today's opening of the Nippers Academy can be viewed here.

Sep 4 2011 U13's all set for new season

With the WDSL season 2011/12 getting ready to commence next weekend, our under 13A side completed their programme of pre-season friendly matches with a tantalising game against Bunclody AFC away on Saturday.  With the introduction of age realignments by the SFAI, our 13A’s move from playing under 11 football last season  to under 13 this year.  This years’ pre-season preparations have seen the team play strong opposition outside of our league focusing on testing ourselves against teams within Dublin and Wexford leagues.   Bunclody having finished last year as Champions within their league meant a good game was always to be anticipated.

Prior to the game the squad received their new playing strip kindly sponsored by Declan Hogan of Viking Security. Our photo shows Declan handing over the kit to Mark Anderson and Tiernan Murray (team captain).

As has been the case with all pre-season matches, both teams utilised all squad members, changing things around as the game progressed and trying different positions for team members.  The superb pitch conditions allowed for a great game, both teams playing passing attractive football with plenty of movement and play along the floor. United started the game well and soon had the opposition defence on the back foot with the pace of Philip Malmo causing problems early on.  Indeed it was a neat ball worked from United’s midfield from Peter Hempenstall across the park to Josh O’Reilly who played Malmo in to see Philip side-step the oncoming defender and place a powerful shot out of reach of the keeper and into the back of the net.   United maintained the pressure in the first half with plenty of competition, neat play and challenges in all areas.  Tiernan Murray, in the United goal, had little to do first half but when called on was impressive and showed why he is our county number one net minder.

The second half saw a number of changes and introductions to the field for both sides.  However it was the number 8 of Bunclody who started to cause problems with his skill and composure.   When he took control of a pass from his backline he switched play from left to right playing in his teammate, who thumped a screamer past the outstretched Murray, and though Tiernan got fingers to the ball hecouldn’t keep it out.  Both sides continued to play well with neither side outplaying the other.  The game continued at 1-1 for the remainder with the result being a fair reflection to both sides.  A very enjoyable match, a good work out with pre-season wrapping up nicely with no defeats so far.

Well done to our U13A’s and best of luck for the upcoming season.  And a thank you to the travelling supporters, parents and all for your continued support.

Aug 28 2011 Opening Day Seven Goal Thriller Sees United Making Winning Start

Arklow United served early notice of their intentions for the season ahead in Division One when edging past a gallant St. Fergal's in an immensely enjoyable 4-3 encounter at Ferndale Park on Sunday morning.  The home side made the perfect start to the season with a goal inside the opening sixty seconds, with the lively Brian Moran quickest to react to an Ivan Hurley ball over the Bray defence, and firing home from close range.  United went close to doubling their lead in the twentieth minute, again a weighted Hurley pass found an Arklow team mate, and Tom Kavanagh went agonisingly close, his effort glancing off the St. Fergal's woodwork.  United's Mark Harte, linking well with the industrious Gerry Earls, forced the Bray keeper into making a fine save two minutes later.  The visitors almost levelled with their next attack, denied by a brave goal-saving challenge from United's Sean Garvey, who was injured in the process of denying an equaliser.  However, the sides were level with the half hour mark approaching, an excellent sweeping move up the right flank splitting the Arklow defence apart, with Paul O'Brien firing past United keeper Robbie Moran.  Arklow's response was excellent.  The injured Garvey was replaced by Nathan Carr and goalscorer Brian Moran almost added a second with a spectacular scissors kick that fizzed inches over the crossbar.  Two minutes into the second half, the home side edged ahead.  Excellent work from Moran resulted in United winning their fourth corner of the game, and from the corner kick a precise cross from sub Nathan Carr found Gerry Earls well placed to slot home from close range. United's lead was once again short-lived, as St. Fergal's levelled in the 55th minute through Ian Flanagan.  The second equaliser led to a sustained spell of pressure on the Arklow goal, with Stephen Fox and Andy Murphy holding an increasingly fragile United defence.  Keeper Robbie Moran made a number of excellent saves before the home side regained a lead.  Excellent work from Tom Kavanagh out on the right wing, finding Moran unmarked inside the Fergal's area and he slotted home from six yards out, his second and United's third.

Five minutes later Moran deservedly secured his hat trick with the goal of the game, and a very early contender for goal of the season, collecting the ball on the left edge of the Bray side's area, beating two players before curving a pin-point shot into the top right hand corner.  Credit though the Bray team for their never-say-die attitude as they sought a route back into the game.  Pressure on the home goal led to Paul O'Brien netting his second goal of the game, and St. Fergal's third, leading to a grand stand finale, with United keeper Robbie Moran having to show good hands late in the game to deny the visitors a share of the spoils.  However, it was to be brother Brian's day, a wonderful hat trick lighting up an entertaining clash between two sides who can indeed expect to perform well in the months ahead.

United's B team welcomed St. Kevin's to Ferndale Park later on Sunday afternoon for their opening WDFL Division 3 clash and similar to the clash earlier in the day between the A team and St. Fergal's, this too proved an exciting game to watch.  Four goals, the honours even, with Anto Kavanagh and Paul Flusk on target for the home side.

July 29 2011 Standing room only in Bay Hotel as United celebrate season

All roads led to a packed Arklow Bay Hotel, with standing room only, as United celebrated the annual End of Season Presentation Awards.  It's a measure of the club's continuing growth that the hotel was a necessary venue in order to accommodate everyone associated with the club.  Club chairman Mark Anderson spoke passionately about the growth of the club, a club committed to providing football for all in our community, and he enthused about the link between the club and Glasgow Celtic.  The Celtic coaches who had made Arklow their home for seven days handed out a record number of trophies and medals, and added words of encouragement to all the youngsters who have achieved so much over the past twelve months.

The link between both clubs may have been highly evident for eagled eyed viewers of Sky Sports as a number of United players were welcomed onto the pitch at the Aviva Stadium throughout the Dublin Super Cup tournament, where Celtic were competing against Manchester City, Inter Milan and the Airtricity XI.  Just twenty four hours prior to the action commencing at Lansdowne Road, a team of Arklow United youngsters were in competition with other Irish clubs who enjoy a link to the Glasgow giants, in Terenure, and the occasion proved to be fruitful in preparation for the upcoming new season here in Wicklow.

Jul 30 2011 Celtic coaches excel in Ferndale sunshine

Ask any of the children who this past week spent a week with five of Glasgow Celtic's top Academy coaches how much they enjoyed themselves and you'll be sure to get a very positive answer.  A week-long Celtic Summer Camp at United's Ferndale Park hosted the largest Celtic Summer Camp in Ireland, with children from the age of four through to thirteen all taking part and furthering their own appreciation and learning of what we like to call "The Beautiful Game".  With a new season looming, Ferndale Park was looking splendid in the borrowed Scottish sunshine, and a hive of activity with the main pitch full of players being put through their drills and the adjoining astroturf catering for the younger children.  Though much of the week's activity evolved around the children enjoying themselves the coaches were keen to instil good habits into each and every player's game and it is a credit to the enthusiasm of the Celtic coaches that they were present in Dublin the day after the camp ended to monitor the efforts of United's U12 and U14 teams who were participating in a pre-Dublin Super Cup tournament for clubs with affiliations to the Glasgow giants.

Our thanks indeed from all at Arklow United Football Club to the five Celtic Academy coaches who left a major impression on the Arklow youngsters and we eagerly look forward to matching and perhaps even bettering this year's camp twelve months from now.  Hail!  Hail!

Mar 21 2011 Academy Coach Chris McGeary reports

First of all I would like to thank all the boys and their parents for the great effort you made in proudly representing the club in the St. Patricks Day Parade.  A special mention must go to Kate, who kindly volunteered to do all the face painting, and to all the other people who assisted her.  It's fantastic to have such goodwill and support around the Club.

As we continue to grow and grow, it is important that we bring new coaches and managers on board, and in that regard I want to extend a big Arklow United welcome to Ben and Des, Sports Science students at Bray Institute for Further Education.  They have chosen the Nippers Academy in order to complete some "hands on" studies, and we are delighted to welcome them both.  They have proved themselves to be both competent and popular coaches.

As enquiries continue to come in about joining us, can I just state that the Academy is always open to new members, from children born in 2006 onwards, and for a cost of just €2 per session it is great value.

Finally boys, I want you to keep practising and playing with the ball each day in order to improve your skills, and I am sure the coaches in Glasgow Celtic will be very impressed with you all when they come to visit us shortly.

Jan 30 2011 U8 RED DIVISION WICKLOW ROVERS C 2 ARKLOW UNITED 6

A good result for United today and well deserved for the performances in the previous two games and all the hard work on the training ground.United started like a train today, using the width to great effect, a ploy worked on in training the day before.  The first goal came when Joe McGeary glided past two defenders and set up Jordan Wall for a tap in.  For all the good play, United failed to add to the scoreline, and Rovers equalised on the stroke of half time with a shot from outside the box.  The second half was more or less dominated by United.  We regained the lead when Tiernan "Inzaghi" Lockhart scored from close range after the keeper failed to hold a shot.  Joe McGeary grabbed a third when he cut in from the left and placed a right foot drive to the far corner. Tiernan added his second when he rounded a defender and gave the keeper no chance, and Adam Lambert tapped in from close range for his first goal for United.  Tiernan Lockhart completed his hat-trick when the keeper had parried Adam's effort.  Tiernan could have added his fourth, but an audacious lob hit the crossbar and bounced over and last but not least Sean Clare won possession in his own penalty area and ran the length of the pitch to outside right, only for our strikers to fail to convert his cross.

In truth this was a day where everyone played well and contributed, with Darragh Furlong, Marcus Wolff and Dean Harte all enjoying their best games in a green and black shirt.

Squad: Andrew Boden, Eoin O'Neill, Sean Clare, Cian McLoughlin, Dean Harte, Jordan Wall, Adam Lambert, Joe McGeary, Tiernan Lockhart, Darragh Furlong, Marcus Wolff.

Jan 23 2011 U12 Division 1 ARKLOW UNITED 21 WICKLOW ROVERS C 0

Goal fest at Old Dublin Road

Arklow United bounced back from a 4-1 defeat to league leaders St. Anthony's to record their biggest win in a goal fest at Old Dublin Road.  United scored 21 goals in all – matching the number of players in this large squad.  United started the game very sprightly, in particular the midfield duo of Cormac O'Shea and Dillon Mourdant.  This midfield duo dominated the early possession and moved the ball quickly to their wingers Callum Smale and Gavin Bentley.  With both wingers easily finding space United very quickly started to find the back of the net, with Dillon Mourdant scoring first following an excellent ball from the left winger Callum Smale.  It did not take long for the second goal to arrive with an unstoppable shot from Peter Tyrrell.

United continued to dominate the game and had a number of opportunities to extend their lead but were guilty at times of trying to score the spectacular.  When we showed more composure in possession and with our shots the goals started to flow.  Peter Tyrrell showed what he has to offer for the rest of the season with a super hat-trick in the first 20 minutes.  The United defence tried to get in on the scoring action and saw Jessica McDonald, Ryan Messitt, Michael O'Sullivan and Eva Howell all pushing forward when they had space and provide some great support for the midfield and front line.  David McGeary was unlucky not to get a goal but gave great support to the rest of his team-mates.  Half-time saw United lead 9-0.

United emptied their bench for the second half and made a number of positional changes.  Despite some fine saves throughout the match from the Rovers keeper United started the second half as they finished the first half with a goal fest.  With United dominating the game our keeper Eoin Kavanagh showed his alertness on the few occasions he was called into action, quickly coming off his line to clear any balls.  Jessica McDonald was unlucky not to get a goal and had two great efforts saved from her weaker left foot (one of the manager's highlights of the game is to see players use their weaker foot when passing and shooting – well done Jessica!).

With so many goals scored it’s hard to recount each goal scored!  So here is the summary....a rare outfield appearance from keeper Shane Halpin saw him play at striker in the second half and deservedly score tqo goals.  Cormac O'Shea scored four goals following a fine individual and captain’s performance.  Callum Smale continues to improve each season and today saw Callum deservedly get a hat-trick.  Dillon Mourdant playing in a variety of positions, provided much of the assists throughout the game and was unlucky not to finish on a hat-trick but bagged himself two goals.  Sean Mulligan the United engine despite playing only the second half at centre back scored a deserved hat-trick.  Centre-back Michael O'Sullivan scored his first goal for United with a fine run slotting the ball under an advancing Rovers keeper.  Tom Hurley showed what he is capable off with a very strong performance in the second half and his determination and fight to win the ball saw him score a great goal.  Sean Cronin was another player unlucky not to score a hat-trick and finished the game with two well taken goals.  Finally Peter Tyrrell was the first player to score a hat-trick – scoring his third on the 20th minute mark.  The great team spirit of this squad of players was evident on and off the pitch.  Special thanks to the players who did not make the match-squad but sill turned up to support their team mates. Well done lads!  You’ll each get a Jaffa cake next week.

Now for the BIG NEGATIVE today: the goal celebrations – not one somersault or back flip!

Jan 23 2011 Welcome Back!

A big welcome back to all the children in our Academy and a special word for the new members who signed up yesterday.  We hope you all enjoyed the Christmas break, and the coaches are reporting back that you are all showing great levels of skill and that shows you have been practising a lot, waiting for the Academy to start up.  Soccer is a simple game to play and enjoy, you just need a ball, a little area to make a goals, and off you go.

This year promises to be the best ever at Arklow United, there's so much happening and lots to look forward to. The highlight should be the Glasgow Celtic summer camp; it’s brilliant and fantastic fun.  A lot of the moves and skills we do at the Academy have come from the 2 summer camps previously held at Arklow United, where the coaches Jose, Graeme, John, Scott and Colm showed us how to train and play the Celtic way and we learned the favourite skills and tricks of famous players such as Larsson, McStay, McGeady, Lambert, Lennon and others.

So spread the word around to your friends and neighbours, the Academy will run every Saturday at 11am until further notice and it just costs €2 every week.

See you there!!

Jan 17 2011 Soccer Sisters show their skills

Despite the weather conditions 50 girls registered for the inaugural Arklow United/FAI Soccer Sisters camp. The Soccer Sisters was launched by FAI Development Officer Alan Reynolds and Arklow United Schoolboys/Girls chairperson Mark Anderson.

[flickr photo=5222985711 size=small]In launching the camp Alan Reynolds explained to the girls and their parents that one of the main aims for Soccer Sisters was to promote the participation of girls in soccer throughout the county of Wicklow.  Alan explained that the camp was structured so all the girls will learn new skills, improve on existing ones, play matches amongst their peers under the guidance of the Soccer Sister coaches.  Alan explained the future plans for Soccer Sisters with organised blitzes against similar camps throughout Wicklow at the end of the 10 week period.  Alan also asked everyone to spread the word and to encourage even more girls to participate in what promises to be a fun 10 weeks and a great way of making new friends whilst learning new soccer skills.

Mark Anderson on behalf of Arklow United welcomed all the girls and their families to Ferndale Park and explained that the main ethos of our club was “providing soccer for the community of Arklow”, and ensuring that everyone had the chance to participate in soccer.  Mark thanked the girls for turning out in the conditions but with the clubs recent addition of an Astro Pitch to its already excellent facilities it ensures our players and camps are not affected by the weather.

Arklow United would like to thank Lisa Flusk for leading the coaching of the first training session and judging by the smiles and laughter on the pitch it was a great success.  Once again many thanks to all the girls that turned out and we are looking forward to welcoming everyone and their friends to Ferndale Park every Saturday, 2-3pm.

Our website will be updated in the next week with a page dedicated to the Soccer Sisters so please keep checking the website for news, updates and photos from the soccer camp.

Jan 15 2011 U11 Premier ARKLOW UNITED 2 ARDMORE ROVERS 1

Great win for United.

After the Christmas break and weather enforced League shutdown, football returned on Saturday at Ferndale Park.  United welcomed Ardmore who sat top of the league and unbeaten prior to this game.

In what was very difficult conditions the game was played by both sides with a great deal of skill and flair on offer.  It should be noted that the pitch was one of very few in Wicklow that was playable on Saturday, which is a great reflection on all those who keep the club facilities up to scratch.

Ardmore dominated the first fifteen minutes, having opened the scoring in the tenth minute, and going close with another two good chances.  United gradually got into the game and started to create some chances themselves.  Glen Power provided some great chances down the left but nobody was there to finish.

As the game swung from one end to another United took advantage of a free kick given outside the box. Conor Kenny floated the kick in and caused confusion in the box which allowed James Larkin to slot home.  United grew in confidence and half time came a bit to early for them.  Philip Malmo and James Hogan replaced Conor and Glen at half time as United went for it.

The second half saw the game go from one end to another with both teams playing some great football given the conditions and chances aplenty.  Tiernan Murray was again great in goals and all the back four - Graham Byrne, Ciaran O'Shea, Josh O'Reilly and Jamie Garnett well organised and committed.

As the game went on, Peter Hempenstall, Dylan Anderson and Rhys Lacey all went close and then made way for Cillian Kavanagh, Conor O'Neill and Jason Roche, and it was one the subs who got the winner.

After a Ardmore attack, Ciaran broke up the play and passed it to James Larkin.  He drove in to centre of the park with three minutes left in the game and played a ball over the top for Jason Roche to run onto. Jason gathered the ball and drove towards the box and despite Ardmore's defender getting the ball it broke kindly for Jason to calmly place the ball past the keeper.

A very calm finish from Jason gave United the 3 points. United held on to what they had for the last few minutes to move up the table.

Dec 21 2010 Marvellous gesture from United youngsters

[flickr photo=5280108434 size=medium]

Arklow United schoolboys and girls once again showed the true spirit of Christmas this year when they all agreed to give up their yearly gift from the Club in favour of a donation to those less well off than them.

Instead of receiving a selection box from the Schoolboy/Girl Committee this year, the players decided to give up their chocolate and use that money instead to give to charity.  The charity picked by the coaches and committee was Saint Vincent de Paul, for the outstanding work they do locally in the community.

[flickr photo=5279503757 size=small]

Ann Coburn from SVdP was present on Saturday morning to receive a cheque for €200 from Arklow United Football Club and WDSL U11 goalkeeper Tiernan Murray.  The gesture from the kids was very well received from Ann on behalf of SVdP and the donation will be put to great use locally in the Arklow community.

The Schoolboys/Girls committee and managers are very proud of our players and how they have once again showed their teamwork, community spirit and goodwill.  Our players are a great example of what being part of a club in a community is all about – THEY ARE ALL WINNERS ON AND OFF THE FIELD.

Dec 1 2010 United set for Soccer Sisters programme

What Is It?

  • Are you a girl who wants to have fun and make friends?
  • Are you aged between 7 and 12 years of age?
  • Do you want to learn to play soccer?

If so then the Arklow United/FAI Aviva Soccer Sisters Programme is for you – one hour of soccer, once a week for ten weeks.[flickr photo=5222985711 size=small]

The Football Association of Ireland and Arklow United Football Club are delighted to announce the upcoming AVIVA Soccer Sister camp at the recently constructed Astro Pitch in Arklow United grounds at Ferndale Park.  The camp is open to girls aged 7-12 years, with the aim of increasing the number of girls playing soccer, and will take place each Saturday at 2pm from January 15, 2011 to Saturday, March 19, 2011.  As a nationwide programme the aim of the AVIVA Soccer Sisters Camps is to improve skills in a structured and a safe coaching environment.  As the camps are for girls only, it will give the participants an opportunity to improve existing skills, learn new ones, and play matches amongst their peers.  FAI Development Officers have also linked the camps to local clubs to ensure sustainability for girls wishing to continue their soccer education.  Each participant will receive a special Soccer Sister Kit and water bottle, as well as an excellent ten weeks of coaching.[flickr photo=5222985789 size=small]

This is a great programme to introduce girls to playing soccer or for girls looking forward to a 10 weeks of football.  The FAI have linked with local clubs such as Arklow United so as to ensure sustainability and to provide a pathway for girls wishing to continue playing football after the camps.  Arklow United is at the forefront of Ladies soccer in Wicklow, with a senior ladies team playing for the last few seasons in the Wexford Ladies league, and plans to register a number of girls soccer teams in the new WDSL schoolgirls league next season.  At the recent official launch of the AVIVA Soccer Sisters Easter Camps, Republic of Ireland international Gillian McDonald said, "I started playing football when I was young and would have loved the opportunity to play on an Aviva Soccer Sisters Camp.  I visited the camp in Monaghan last year and I saw how much fun the girls had and also how they grew in confidence as players over the time I was there."

Arklow United are delighted to announce that this camp is free following funding from the FAI and YPFSF (Young People's Facilities and Services Funding).  Places on the camp are limited and we advise that you contact Neill McAnaspie (086-1539941) or Mark Anderson (0863498435) early to book a place and get your free Soccer Sister Kit!

Nov 26 2010 Hoops happy with growing partnership

The following article was published this week on the Official Glasgow Celtic website and once again demonstrates Glasgow Celtic's commitment to developing our existing club partnership.  Arklow United will be announcing details in the coming weeks of the various projects and programmes that this valued club partnership will bring to our members.

http://www.celticfc.net/news/stories/news_241110120153.aspx

Article in full:

CELTIC representatives will be visiting Dublin on Sunday, December 5, 2010 to deliver a presentation on the new and exciting Club Partnership Programme aimed at providing opportunities for clubs throughout Ireland to become engaged with Celtic to help develop young players and coaches.

Over the past few years, Celtic has teamed up with Mount Merrion YFC, Arklow United FC, Shannon Town United AFC and Strand Celtic FC to deliver Celtic Soccer Camps, Coach Education, Matchday Experience and Residential Camps and have been getting rave reviews.

Denis Murphy, a coach with Mount Merrion YFC, said: “In 2009 over 20 of our Under-15s attended a Celtic Residential Camp in St Andrews. This was followed up in 2010 when 46 boys from their U14 and U16 age groups went to Kilgraston School in Bridge of Earn. Both camps were hugely successful.

“The coaching quality was of a very high standard and the commitment and enthusiasm shown by the coaches towards the lads was just great.

“The feedback from the lads has been universally positive, great memories, existing friendships re-enforced and new ones forged. Enquiries are coming in already for next year.”

And Mark Anderson, chairman of Arklow United, added: “Our under-13 team spent the week living as professional footballers in August of this year at St. Leonard’s in Scotland with Celtic.

“The week was packed with training drills, match type situations and challenge games, while the evenings were filled with workshops on lifestyle and nutrition.

“The highlights of the week were many but the trip to Celtic Park and the opportunity to train at Lennoxtown stuck out for the boys and their two coaches who travelled with them.

“As a club in Ireland with lots of players who support Celtic, this trip was a great success, the facilities, coaching and care taken by Celtic with the players and managers was exceptional and all the kids has asked to go back again.”

The presentation will cover the following themes;
* Holiday Soccer Schools
* Coach Education / Club Audit
* Matchday Experience
* Weekend Experience
* Residential Camps
* Elite Talent ID Camps

The presentation will take place in the Carnegie Court Hotel, Swords, Dublin kicking off at 9:30am. For more information on the Club Partnership Programme or to register your interest in attending the event on 5th December, please email Greig Robertson on grobertson@celticfc.co.uk

Nov 24 2010 U11 Division 2 ARKLOW UNITED 3 ARKLOW TOWN 1

On a great morning for football, this Arklow United team played their first ever match on the big pitch at Ferndale Park.  In what was a very entertaining game both teams gave their all and were fully committed. Arklow United created some early chances, but lacked composure in front of goal.  In a game that went from end to end both sides had their chances.

It was Arklow Town who scored first.  A direct free kick, from ex-United player Shane Connolly, found its way into the net despite Ross Joyce getting his hands to it.  At half time a reminder to the team that they were well capable of winning this game seemed to spur United on.  From the first whistle of the second half United went on the attack and efforts from Tiernan McBride, TadhgO'Callaghan, Adam Lennon and Ryan McGowan were superbly saved by a very good Town keeper. The pressure from United paid off when a goalbound strike from Ryan McGowan was handled on the line by a Town defender, which left the referee with no choice but to send the player off and award a penalty.  Tiernan McBride made certain with the penalty to level the game. With the extra player United stretched the Town team and took a deserved lead when Ryan McGowan beat the offside trap to calmly finish.  United created many more chances but were continually denied by a very good keeper.  The third goal eventually came when Michael McGeary found himself in on goal and he calmly put the ball past the keeper.  Not to be outdone Ross Joyce then pulled off some good saves to keep the score at 3-1.  United remained solid and got the victory which they deserved.

Well done to all players in the squad for a great effort, with Darren Garrett, Connor O'Reilly, and Sean Henry putting in particularly good performances.

Squad: Ross Joyce, Darren Garrett, Emma McGeary, Connor O'Reilly, Sean Henry, Lorcan Sheridan, Adam Lennon, Tiernan McBride, Ryan McGowan, Aaron Dalton, Tadhg O'Callaghan, Laura Rice, Bobby Reilly, Michael McGear.

Oct 16 2010 Former Liverpool midfield maestro opens United's new Astro pitch

In another historical day for Arklow United Football Club, an attendance exceeding 350 people in total came to Ferndale Park to meet and greet former Republic of Ireland and Liverpool FC legend Ronnie Whelan, who performed the official GRAND OPENING of our new 2000 sq/m Astro Pitch.  Following a tour of the excellent facilities already in Ferndale Park, Ronnie spent time with the schoolboys/girls and even gave a short coaching session to the Arklow United under 9s and our fledgling academy, "The Nippers".  Thanks to the likes of You Tube many of the clubs younger members got to see some of Ronnie's special moments in his illustrious career.  Ronnie was put under some pressure during a Q&A session with club members, having to field questions about Trapattoni's tactics in the Ireland v Russia match and the current state of Liverpool FC.

Ronnie made a special mention on the day to the the dedication and commitment of all past and current committee members in constructing the first ever Astro pitch by a soccer club in south Wicklow.

The committees would like to thank Ronnie and all our guests on the day and a special thanks to our club sponsors who have supported the club over the years.

Photos of the day our available on our FLICKR website: - http://www.flickr.com/photos/arklowunited

If anyone has any photos of the day please e-mail pr@arklowunited.com and we will put them on our website for everyone to view.

Arklow United are delighted to announce that our U11 premier team goalkeeper Tiernan Murray has been selected for the U11 Wicklow County Squad.  Following a number of trials over the last few weeks Tiernan's displays were rewarded when U11 County Manager Clint Nelson announced his squad for the upcoming season.

Both Mark Anderson and Tom Larkin, Tiernan's managers at Arklow United, would like to, on behalf of the Club, congratulate Tiernan and wish him and his WDSL representative team mates well for the upcoming season.  Everyone at Arklow United Football Club knows that the WDSL U11 team have a safe pair of hands in Tiernan.  Best of luck Tiernan and once again well done from everyone at Arklow United!

Oct 3 2010 Legend Whelan set to open new Astro pitch

[flickr photo=5047530355 size=medium]Republic of Ireland and Liverpool FC legend Ronnie Whelan will perform the official GRAND OPENING of Arklow United's recently constructed 2000 sq/m ASTRO PITCH this Saturday 9th October from 12:30 to 15:00.  The Arklow United Football Club Committee would like to invite all current members and past members (seniors, ladies and schoolboys/girls), club sponsors and their families to the official opening, to meet Irish Legend Ronnie Whelan.  The work put in by the present and past committee members deserves an enormous amount of credit for the commitment they demonstrated in successfully opening Arklow’s first all weather soccer pitch and it is a great honour for our club to have Ronnie performing the opening duties.

[flickr photo=5048167326 size=medium]Ronnie was a regular for the Republic of Ireland making his debut on April 29 1981, he came off the bench in the 63rd minute of the 3–1 victory over Czechoslovakia at Landsdowne Road.  One of Ronnie's most memorable goals in an Irish shirt was a spectacular long range goal against USSR in the 1998 European Championships, in Hannover, West Germany, as the Republic went agonisingly close to reaching the semi final stages.  Ronnie represented Ireland 53 times from 1981 to 1995 and scored 3 goals.

Ronnie was an integral part of the dominant Liverpool side of the 1908s.  In all, Ronnie made 493 appearances for Liverpool, scoring 73 goals.  He won six League title medals, two FA Cups, a European Cup and three Milk Cup medals in his time with the club.

Arklow blow Rathnew Out! – United ease into second round with nine goal extravaganza

By Paul Dowling (Evening Herald)

Many thanks to Paul for allowing us reproduce the article and photo on our website.

Two blitzes at the start of each period saw Arklow ease into the second round of the U11 SFAI Menton-Seery Cup.  Leading 3-1 at the interval last Saturday morning at Shamrock Park, United hit six goals without reply to record a comprehensive victory.

Having begun their campaign in the Heatons/Sportsworld WDSL Under 11 Premier Division with a 7-2 win over Wicklow Town and a 4-4 draw with Wolfe Tone Youth Club A, the away side needed just 64secs to break the deadlock.  Philip Malmo collected the ball 30 yards out.  And he turned to hit a wonderful half volley that dipped over a stranded Adam Doyle.

James Larkin rattled the crossbar for the away side in the fifth minute before Division 1 Rathnew levelled matters within moments.  James Moorehouse charged down a clearance and burst past three opponents before converting past Tiernan Murray.

However, that joy was short-lived.  Larkin rattled the bar from a free before Arklow restored their lead in the 11th minute.  Peter Hempenstall's surging right wing run and cross saw Dylan Anderson force the ball over the line inside a crowded six-yard area.  It got even better in the 18th minute.  Malmo swivelled well and shot low to the far corner with Jamie Garnett making sure the ball went in.

United brought on three substitutes at half-time and within three and half minutes of the restart, two of them had scored.  Larkin intercepted a goal kick after just 75 seconds. The covering Ronan Earls stopped on the line but Rhys Lacey pounced on the rebound. Then in the 33rd minute, Rathnew twice failed to clear a corner and James Kavanagh guided in a close range header.

Larkin deservedly got on the scoresheet in the 41st minute when brilliantly lofting in a 20-yard shot.  He turned provider five minutes later.  Using burning pace, Hempenstall latched on a through ball to make it 7-1.

The scoring spree continued in the 56th minute.  Doyle couldn't hold onto a fierce shot and Malmo slotted in from ten yards.  The rout was completed in the last minute of normal time.  Hempenstall’s end-line cross from the right wing wasn’t cut out and Lacey had the simple task of tapping into an empty net.

RATHNEW AFC: Adam Doyle, Liam Ronan, Ronan Earls, Stephen Mc Guinness, Christian Kearney, Cian Hunter, John Moorehouse, Evan Doyle, Luke Corcoron, Paul King, Kyle Ryan.
SUBS: Rory Dowling (for Hunter), Kyle Devlin (for Ryan) (both half-time), Sean Paul Dunne (for Kearney), Charlie O Brien (for King), Owen Gregory (for Corcoron) (38 mins)

May 22 2010 United youngsters step onto the hallowed turf at Parkhead

Arklow United - Special guests of GLASGOW CELTIC

Introduction of Arklow United to the fantastic Glasgow Celtic supporters at half time in the Glasgow Celtic versus Saint Johnstone SPL fixture.

Mar 29 2010 United In Partnership with Celtic

{joomplu:584} Arklow United Football Club schoolboys/girls have successfully completed a partnership deal with Glasgow Celtic that will allow the Club exclusive access to Academy and Development coaches with coach education, summer camps, match day experiences and residential camps also available for their players.  Arklow United have decided to open the summer camp up all clubs in Wicklow in the spirit of football in the community. Further details will be announced soon.

This exciting link between the two clubs will offer the Arklow United coaches and players an opportunity to learn from the coaches of one of the most highly regarded academy's in the UK, with Celtic coaches providing their services to the club in Arklow.

This is an exclusive deal for Arklow United and has being a long time in negations as both parties wanted to be sure that that it would be beneficial to the kids. Celtic have identified a small number of clubs in Ireland that they will deal with directly that best match their principles of football for everybody in the community and Arklow United best matched those principles after several fact finding visits.

To kick start this relationship Arklow United were special guests of Marc Conroy, Senior Football Development Officer for Glasgow Celtic, and Jose Romero, Community Academy Coach, recently in Glasgow.  As special guests they took in a tour of the stadium and some private training from Jose.  The kids aged from 6 to 14 were then taken to the match against St. Johnstone, and watched as Robbie Keane and company notched up three goals in a convincing win.  However, the highlight of the weekend was at half time when the team were invited to step out onto the pitch at Celtic Park and being introduced to a crowd of over 30,000 fans.  After being announced to the crowd as the new community club Celtic have developed links with in Ireland and receiving a fantastic reception the kids took their leave.

A truly memorable weekend matched by a very special occasion.

Arklow United would like to thank each of the players for their exemplary behaviour over the weekend and a special thanks to the parents for their support and help over the weekend.  A special mention must be made to Mark Anderson (Arklow United), Marc Conroy (Celtic) and Jose Romero (Celtic) and the rest of the Glasgow Celtic staff for making a truly memorable weekend for our players.

Dec 22 2009 United Youngsters Make Donation To SVdP

{joomplu:571} Arklow United schoolboys and girls showed the true spirit of Christmas this year when they all agreed to give up their yearly gift from the Club in favour of a donation to those less well off than them.

Each year the kids at United receive a selection box form the Schoolboy Committee but this year after the recent floods and downturn in the economy they suggested giving up their chocolate and use that money instead to give to charity.  The charity picked by the coaches and committee was Saint Vincent de Paul, for the outstanding work they do locally in the community.  Helena Byrne from SVP was present on Saturday morning to receive a cheque for €200 from some of the kids.

{joomplu:572}The gesture from the kids was very well received and “would be put to great use locally”.  Helena commented on the goodwill gesture from the kids and the Club saying “how great it is to see kids thinking about others at this time of year”.

Mark Anderson, Schoolboy/Girl Chairman echoed Helena’s comments and said how proud the club were of the kids and the decision they made.  “This is an example of teamwork at its best,” was the comment he made, before adding that "these kids are an example of what being part of a Club in a community is all about. Dec 11 2009 Growing Partnership Confirmed

Last weekend saw the links between Glasgow Celtic Football Club and Arklow United Football Club Schoolboys/Girls grow even more when Marc Conroy, Football Development Coach for Celtic's Academy and Celtic under 11 manager arrive for a visit.

{joomplu:565}Marc came over as part of a fact finding trip for Celtic after Arklow United’s successful summer camp.  The seeds were sown in the summer into what Arklow United hope will develop into a successful partnership with Scotland's premier club and the first British side to win the European Cup.  Marc officially sealed the details for another summer camp in August 2010, with Arklow United with joining details available soon.

After a brief history and tour of the club Marc delivered some fantastic coaching for all the teams from the academy, right up to under 15’s.  Despite the dreadful weather and conditions the kids at the Club turned out in numbers for this rare chance to learn from a professional who coaches the best in Scotland.  The Club would like to offer a big thank you to all the kids and coaches that turned up on what were two excellent nights of training.

Nov 1 2009 Youngsters UNITED in FARE campaign

Last week UEFA and FARE held a dedicated FARE (Football against Racism in Europe) week.  FARE Week aims to eliminate racism from soccer, as well as promoting diversity through sport.  In support of FARE week the East Wicklow Youth Service, Co. Wicklow VEC sports promotion unit and the FAI hosted an indoor Soccer Blitz, on Tuesday 27th October in the Arklow Leisure Centre. The aim of the blitz was to combine awareness, football and fun. Teams of young people from the east Wicklow area in the 10 to 18 years age range from local soccer clubs, youth groups and youth centres participated in the event.

Many thanks to the players and management of the Under 9, Under 10a, Under 10b and Under 11 teams who participated in the blitz and in particular to one of the Arklow United teams who got a special award from Alan Reynolds (FAI Development officer for Co. Wicklow) and East Wicklow Youth Service. All team members had the opportunity to participate in a 'Show racism the red card' DVD workshop. This was a great opportunity for our players to learn about other cultures and support the anti racism message.

On behalf of the players, Arklow United would like to extend their thanks to the organisers of an excellently organised soccer blitz which promoted the FARE message.

Jul 29 2009 Hail! Hail! Celtic camp is a resounding success

Arklow United’s Ferndale Park became like Celtic park for a time last week as coaches from the world famous Glasgow Celtic arrived for what was a very successful and fun summer camp.

The Arklow United and Celtic camp where open to all boys and girls of all abilities.  The wait is over - Welcome Glasgow Celtic.

Arklow United shares the same ethos and spirit that make Celtic such a special cub and the best supported in Ireland. Arklow United provides football for over 200 members each year and we have a number of teams ranging from U8s to U15s playing weekly in the WDSL and the Arklow United Academy that caters for children between 5 and 7 every Saturday morning.

Celtic’s Academy coaches David ’Yorkie’ Holdsworth and Jose Romero provided the expertise as close on 40 children and plenty of watching Arklow United coaches, along with parents, enjoyed a week-long camp that will long be remembered.  The Celtic coaches focused on developing skills, techniques, speed and agility throughout the week.  The emphasis on fun and player development, the coaches spent the week working with kids on developing the football skills and also educating them on healthy lifestyle that are needed by professional footballers, like Aiden McGeady who also plays for Celtic and Ireland.  “It isn’t all down to football ability, you need the right attitude and proper lifestyle if you want to succeed,” was the comment from Yorkie.  By the end of the week the improvement from the kids was easily noticeable.  ”It makes it rewarding for us as coaches to see the kids take on board what we teach and improve,” Jose added.  The two coaches were very impressed with the facilities here at Ferndale Park and said it added to the success of the camp.

Arklow United schoolboy chairman Mark Anderson was over the moon with the Club's first summer camp, saying, "the relationship we are building with Celtic has taken some time and effort by all parties but the benefits for the kids this week make it all worthwhile. We had a great bunch of kids whose attitude and behaviour was second to none and arrived every day with a smile and eager to get going. We already are planning next year’s camp and like this year's will open it up to all clubs in Wicklow not just our own."  He also said that the whole Club would like to thank both coaches for the fantastic job all week and looks forward to next year's already. ”The friendship the Club has built with Celtic and the two coaches is one all the kids can benefit from,” he added.

Other highlights of the week included the Arklow United senior team and Ladies team receiving coaching lessons. The WDSL Kennedy Cup squad also had a chance to train with the Celtic coaches in what was a fantastic night with the squad making a great impression with David and Jose.

Arklow United expect a big demand for next year and other forthcoming events with Celtic and anybody interested should contact the schoolboy chairman for details - Mark Anderson on 086 3498435.

May 20 2009 Superb United Land Cup In Style

Arklow United U9A team gave a tremendous display of football in the Paul Holmes Cup Final in Shamrock Park, Rathnew on Saturday morning.  Stong winds kept the play very close with the scoreline remaining at 0-0 at half time despite United hitting the post on more than one occasion.  Into the second half Arklow United broke the stalemate with a striking goal from the captain James Larkin that just rattled the net, a strike even Ronaldo himself would have been proud of!  After that Arklow United displayed some skilful football with Philip Malmo getting the second for United and James Larkin hitting the net twice more to give him his well deserved hat trick, with the  score line finishing 4-0 in United's favour.  Overal, al great team performance especially from the goalkeeper on the day Tiernan Murray who stood in for the regular keeper Rokas.  The team is also through to the Shield Final and the League title has yet to be decided, so hopefully it is one down, two to follow, from this great side.
